Motorcycle Insurance in Pennsylvania: What Every Rider Should Know Before the Next Ride
Pennsylvania has some of the best riding roads in the Northeast — but before you roll out of the driveway this season, it pays to know exactly what your motorcycle insurance policy covers and where state law leaves you exposed. Here is a plain-English guide for Springfield-area riders.
What Pennsylvania Legally Requires
Under Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. § 1786), every registered motorcycle must carry liability insurance before it touches a public road. The state minimums are usually written as “15/30/5”:
- $15,000 for bodily injury to one person
- $30,000 for total bodily injury when more than one person is hurt
- $5,000 for damage to someone else’s property
Liability pays the other party when you are at fault. It does nothing for your own injuries or your own bike — a gap many new riders do not discover until it is too late. Riding uninsured can bring a registration suspension, a fine, and a possible license suspension.
The Coverage Gap Most Riders Miss
Here is the part that surprises Pennsylvania drivers who also ride: motorcycles are excluded from the state’s no-fault system. On your car policy, first-party medical benefits automatically help pay your medical bills after a crash, no matter who caused it. Motorcycles do not get that protection automatically.
That means if you are hurt in a motorcycle accident, there may be no first-party medical coverage to fall back on — unless you have specifically added Medical Payments (MedPay) coverage. MedPay is optional, affordable, and pays your medical costs regardless of fault. For most riders, it is one of the smartest add-ons on the list.
Coverages Worth Considering
Beyond the state minimum, a few options deserve a real look when you build your motorcycle insurance policy:
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM): protects you if the driver who hits you has no insurance or not enough. Given how often drivers simply do not see motorcycles, this one matters.
- Comprehensive & Collision: pays to repair or replace your bike after a crash, theft, fire, or storm damage — and it is usually required if you are financing.
- Custom parts & accessories: standard policies often cap coverage for aftermarket exhausts, saddlebags, chrome, and paint. If you have invested in your bike, raise the limit.
- Roadside assistance & trip interruption: handy on longer rides through the Poconos or down to the shore.
Pennsylvania’s Helmet Law — and Why It Can Affect a Claim
Pennsylvania lets many adult riders decide whether to wear a helmet. Riders under 21 must always wear a DOT-approved helmet. Riders 21 and older can go without only if they have at least two years of riding experience or have completed a motorcycle safety course approved by PennDOT or the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
Legal or not, riding without a helmet can come back to bite you at claim time. If you are injured, the other side’s insurer may argue that skipping a helmet made your injuries worse and try to reduce what they pay. Good gear protects your body and your settlement.
A Few Ways to Keep the Premium Reasonable
Bundling your motorcycle with your auto or home insurance can unlock a multi-policy discount. Beyond bundling, a few more moves can help:
- Take an approved motorcycle safety course.
- Ask about lay-up or seasonal options if your bike is stored over the Pennsylvania winter.
- Keep your bike in a locked garage and mention any anti-theft devices.
