What’s Happening Delco: First Week of August

With August already here, the dreadful month of September creeps ever closer. To make sure you still have fun for the rest of the summer I made a list of some things you can do to kick off August. I’m only doing one event per day but click here to see what Delco Times has to offer for you. From a weaving open studio to Ru Paul’s drag race, this list will not leave you disappointed.

August 2: Weaving Open Studio

For all you arts and crafts lovers out there this ones for you. Taking place at 310 Kiamensi Road in Wilmington DE, it may seem far but is only about a 30 minute drive from Springfield. The open studio consists of a 3 hour session (6 – 9 pm) on Tuesdays and Thursdays all year round. The studio is open for everyone of all skill levels to enjoy, from beginner to experienced weavers there’s space to work on floor looms, with table top looms also available. Never been to the Weaving Studio before? Call this number before registering to make sure they have a loom available for you. Tickets are only $15 and there is instruction on design, planning, winding a warp, dressing the loom and weaving technique for beginners.

August 3: Philly Comedy Showcase

For the mid-week slump, Punch Line Philly brings you a packed lineup of Philadelphia’s best comics. Let me start by saying that this is a 21+ show with a 2 drink minimum required per person. The doors open at 8 pm and tickets are $17 which you can buy here. Located in historic Fishtown, this Philly comedy club has hosted some of the world’s most legendary comedians. They offer cocktails, wine, and beer with a variety of food options. This comedy club is sure to give you a mini-vacation from the work week before the weekend.

August 4: Sean Kingston

Sean Kingston has become a staple of a generation. With hits like “Beautiful Girls”, “Fire Burning”, and “Take You There” it was almost impossible to avoid him in the early 2000’s. Not only is he coming to Philly, but playing at the famous Theater of the Living Arts at 334 on South Street. This is an all ages event with doors at 7 pm and the show starting at 8 pm. The tickets range from $25 to $75. Click here to find tickets.

August 5: RuPaul’s Drag Race

RuPaul’s drag race is in its 14th season and is officially back. The show is at The Met in Philadelphia at 858 N Broad St, starting at 8 pm with tickets at $45 (here). This show is a must see. RuPaul’s Drag Race is a reality show in which a group of talented drag queens compete in challenges to impress host RuPaul. He is a trailblazer who kicked down entertainments door in the name of LGBTQ+ acceptance and empowerment, and was the first openly gay black man to host a TV show in 1996. As he signs off each episode of Drag Race, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love somebody else.”

August 6: Phillies v Nationals

With the Phillies currently in third place in the NL East, their odds of making the playoffs are about 60%. If you haven’t been keeping up this year, we have a pretty exciting team and are definitely worthy of going to see. In recent years, our team has been ‘dull’ but with the additions of Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos the Phillies have a lot of offensive power which makes for a fun night of baseball. Schwarber and Harper have also been having a great season as they were both selected for the All Star game this year.  As if this wasn’t enough reason to go, the Phillies are also doing a promotion on Saturday.  The Phillies will be honoring two 1980 World Series champions, Bake McBride and Ron Reed, who will both be inducted into the Toyota Phillies Wall of Fame prior to the game. The game starts at 6:05 pm and you can buy tickets here.

August 7: Family Nature Hike

With the first busy week of summer winding down, it’s time for a relaxing hike with your loved ones. One thing Pennsylvania doesn’t get enough credit for is its beautiful hiking trails. Starting at 11 am, with the help of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine you can take a family hike through the Cassatt Preserve. With 20 acres and 5 miles of trails, the Cassatt Preserve is home to a variety of wildlife and plants that are worth seeing. If you want to go on a more adventurous hike or don’t feel like getting a YMCA membership, I suggest visiting either the Springfield Trail or Ridley Creek State Park.
